What is The TRACE Engine?

 The TRACE Engine is the world’s most affordable and advanced high power reciprocating aircraft engine for Agricultural, Utility, and Cabin-Class aircraft. TRACE Engines L.P. is a Texas based company with corperate offices and manufacturing facilities in Midland, Texas and representation around the world through the Davis Aviation Global Network. The TRACE engine addresses the need of a modern, reliable, and cost effective powerplant solution presented by today’s General Aviation community. 


 The TRACE Engine has been a FAA certified engine since 1999 and has had experience in many fields of aviation, from crop dusting in the Mid-West to utility work in the arctic. Time and again the TRACE engine has proven to be the only viable alternative to the outdated radial engine and the costly turbine powerplant. With 600 max horsepower the Trace engine can provide turbine performance without the high overhead cost that turbines put on operators. Advantages of TRACE Engine

1) Improved HP over Radial

2) Improved Airspeed Performance with Aerodynamic Installation over Radial Installation

A).We have seen a 10-15 knot increase when removing the 1340 Radial and installing the cowled TRACE Engine.

3) Improved Take-Off Performance

A). The TRACE Engine produces 600hp instantly. Performance should equal or exceed the -34 Pratt & Whitney Turbine engine performance.

4) No lag time when increasing power; the Trace engine delivers immediate power when needed thanks to powerful V-8 design and powerful 52-in turbocharger

A). A PT-6 Turbine engine would have to be rated a 1000hp at sea-level to match the performance of the TRACE Engine at altitude.

5) Improved Cargo Capabilities; with TRACE’s optimum fuel consumption you can carry less fuel and more cargo compared to the turbine 

A). The TRACE Engine mated with a propeller will only burn half of the fuel of the -34 Turbine engines. The TRACE Engine fuel burn is equal or less of the Radial engines, but the TRACE Engine maintains an extremely higher level of horsepower and performance.

6) Maintain the simplicity of the piston engine design over costly and complicated turbine engines and outdated radials

7) Eliminate engine damage and corrosion due to freshwater and saltwater with the contained design provided by the TRACE Engine; unlike the turbine engine which is very susceptible

8) Operating Cost compared to turbines is very low; due to lack of overhead and maintenance compared to turbines

9) TRACE Engine economical configuration; such as use of lead acid battery instead of costly NiCad batteries like turbine engines also give operator a new level of freedom

10) TRACE engine will soon offer FADEC capabilities which will allow the use of multiple types of fuel giving incredible versatility to the application

11) Improved noise levels over the radial and turbine; giving the operators and passengers a quieter ride

12) Improved vibration level over turbine and radials; giving crew and passengers a smoother more comfortable flight 

13) Ability of the TRACE engine to operate in extreme hot and cold temps; The trace engines has been operated in high desert heat in Arizona and in extreme cold at the North Pole for extended periods of time and still maintains superior performance    

14) What about cycle times of turbines and how they affect maintenance costs?

A). Turbine operators are handicapped by the cycle times (starts and stops) that their engine allows. The more cycle times the shorter the time between overhauls; this also leads to shortening of engine life. With the TRACE engine there are no start and stop restrictions, there are no cycle times with the TRACE Engine. The TBO replaces the cycle times; the TRACE Engine currently has a 1500 hour TBO and will be granted 500 hour increases up to the 3000 hour projected TBO as experienced engines currently in the field reach higher time.
